We need to preserve the UNT character of the Core.  This was most evident in the extra requirements beyond the 36 defined credit hours -- areas with objectives for:  diversity/globalization, wellness, and additional communications skills.  These requirements aimed to facilitate UNT graduates' futures in an increasingly-diverse, globalized society, which is also an aging society with rising rates of obesity and chronic illness and overly-sedentary lifestyles, and in which new modes of communication are constantly being developed and their use expected of societal members.   Although any university should respond to such needs, the fact was that in a small way UNT did.

Given the decision to shorten the core to 42 credit hours, we will have to be creative about how to maintain these requirements; but it should be possible. (Jim Swan)
